We are a Scottish nursery growing and selling a wide range of plants. These include old favourites and many unusual varieties of herbaceous perennials, grasses, trees, shrubs and plants for shade.
Because we grow at 850 feet above sea level our plants are tough and well acclimatised to Scottish growing conditions. The majority of them are propagated and grown on site for at least a season so are fully hardy and tough enough to cope with our Scottish growing conditions.
One of the best organic shops in the UK with the largest selection of organic and sustainable produce you can find. The shop, together with our butchery and licensed restaurant, is just 16 miles south of central Edinburgh on a real, working organic farm – so you can see exactly where your food comes from. The farm hosts the Breadshare Bakery and Dancing Light Gallery.
Whitmuir Farm is 140 acres, with around 25% in woodland, hedges and shelter belts. This is traditionally sheep and beef country, but we also keep chickens for eggs and meat, turkeys for Christmas, and pigs for pork and bacon. As well as livestock, we grow a wide range of vegetables and soft fruit, plus a small quantity of wheat for baking. Being up around 900 ft on a north-facing slope, we are limited by the short growing season but we extend this a little with polytunnels and by creating sheltered growing areas.
